LCSW ASWB Exam Preparation Resources

The ASWB licensing exam is a big stressor for most social workers. I run monthly groups to prepare for the exam. These are clinical supervision groups (can use towards your license hours). We start with an exam meditation, then check-ins, discussion of resources and strategies everyone is using, and then we review test questions. Let me know if you are interested! Strategies and notes:

  • Don’t get stuck on a single form of studying, try them all.

  • Let Siri read the exam prep materials while driving

  • Ask for accommodations if needed (can get extra time for ESL)

  • When you see a MUST in the question, it’s related to liability, your duty, your license maintenance. (ex: reporting to APS!).

  • You need to get 101 of the 170 exam questions correct in order to pass.

  • You get 4 hours to take the exam.

Note, the exam breaks down into four categories:

  1. Human development, diversity and behavior in the environment (24%)

  2. Assessment, diagnosis and treatment planning (30%)

  3. Psychotherapy, clinical interventions, and case management (27%)

  4. Professional values and ethics (19%)

Oregon residents: you can take the exam at 75 supervision hours. You need 100 hours for your license. There are 170 questions on the exam. 20 of these questions are thrown out. When you’re ready to take the exam, here’s link to apply to the board.
