December 2021 Clinical Supervision Topic: Expectations

Whatever the client thinks is going to lead to change is 90% likely to be the thing that works for them.

It’s December, and we are reflecting on the year.

Many of your clients may be reflecting on their year and thinking of the progress they’ve made overall, and in the life goals they have. As they are coming to you for help towards those goals, they may reflect on the work they’ve done together with you. Has it made a difference? Was it what they thought it would be?

This month we’re exploring expectations. (Expectations are one of the factors in the common factors model.) Feel free to review last year’s post on this, including (and especially) the podcast episode with Eric Vance and Krista Tippett.

Expectations (both yours and your clients’) are big determinants of how things will go in the work you do together. In this article (also linked above), we learn a bit more about how this works.

In preparation for our sessions this month, I’d like to hear about one of your clients and your thoughts on:

  • The things your client tried in order to solve their problem prior to them working with you

  • Their explanation for their distress

  • Your explanation for their distress

  • On a scale of 0-10 (10 is 100%), how much do your clients believe working with you will help them overcome their problem?

Look forward to seeing you all soon.
